Kickboxing for Beginners: What to Expect in Your First Class

Mr Rodney Lockyer

The hardest step in any martial arts journey is simply walking through the dojang doors for the very first time. Gym anxiety is incredibly common. You might be picturing an aggressive environment where beginners are thrown to the wolves. Reputable academies like ATI in Perth strictly prioritise your physical safety. We replace the intimidating fight-club stereotype with a highly supportive community. (And no, you absolutely do not need to be in elite athletic shape just to show up).

To eliminate upfront financial barriers, we provide clean loaner gloves for your trial sessions. Simply wear comfortable athletic clothing. You will be training barefoot on professional-grade rubber mats engineered to absorb high-impact forces.

Warming Up and Technical Foundations

Your first 60-minute kickboxing class follows a highly structured progression designed to protect beginners.

  • The Warm-Up (10–15 Min): We start with light cardio to safely raise your core temperature.
  • Accessible Mobility: Forget the terrifying “cartwheel line of doom” you might remember from primary school. Our routines are entirely modified to suit your current fitness level.
  • Technique (15–25 Min): The focus shifts to mastering your defensive guard alongside foundational strikes like the jab-cross.
  • Neuromuscular Focus: We build proper movement pathways before ever asking you to add speed.

Dynamic Pad Work

  • Partner Drills (15–25 Min): You will apply your new skills during dynamic combination drills on the focus mitts.
  • Targeted Application: This phase develops your explosive power while keeping your heart rate firmly in the 70% to 85% maximum zone.
  • Ego-Free Culture: You work cooperatively with a partner rather than against them. Nobody is here to act like a keyboard warrior.

Conditioning and the Cooldown

  • Stabilisation (10–15 Min): We end the active block with core exercises designed to enhance muscular stamina.
  • Restoration (5–10 Min): Deep static stretching restores your resting heart rate.
  • Managing Expectations: You will likely feel deep “day-two” soreness in underutilised muscles like your hip flexors later in the week.

This physical feedback is completely normal. It simply means your kinetic chain is finally waking up—a demanding mechanical shift that breaks the static paralysis of modern office life and begins restoring your body's inherent capacity for coordinated rotational torque.

What specific physical goal are you hoping to achieve during your first month on the mats?
