Boxing Gear Guide: Equipment for Bag Work vs. Sparring in Perth

Mr Rodney Lockyer

Walking into a martial arts/boxing gym for the very first time can feel incredibly intimidating. You stare at a wall of equipment. It is packed with varying glove weights alongside hand wraps and defensive headgear. Put simply, beginners always ask our coaches the exact same question. “What equipment do I actually need to get started?”

The answer depends entirely on your personal training goals and where you sit within our flexible two-tier system. Perhaps you want to sweat it out on the heavy bags for cardiovascular fitness. Or maybe you are ready to transition into our purpose-built rings for live drills. Either way, securing the right gear is vital. Proper equipment ensures maximum safety while locking your wrists into a protected alignment.

This guide breaks down exactly what you need to know. We will take you from selecting your very first pair of boxing gloves all the way to gearing up for technical ring sparring.

Tier 1: Essential Gear for Fitness and Bag Work

If you are joining our Tier 1 fitness classes, your primary focus is cardiovascular conditioning and stress relief without any physical contact. You will be striking focus mitts and heavy bags. Therefore, your equipment is engineered strictly for hand protection rather than absorbing the impact from a live opponent.

When preparing for your first session, you do not need to drop hundreds of dollars upfront. Here is the foundational gear required to hit the bags safely:

  • Hand Wraps: Hand wraps are an important addition. Before your bare hands even touch the inside of a glove, these wraps compress the delicate bones and tendons in your hand to create a rock-solid base. We highly recommend extended length wraps. This extended length allows you to weave the fabric securely between your knuckles and down your wrist. It effectively prevents hyperextension when you land a heavy hook.
  • Bag and Pad Gloves (10oz to 12oz): When you start hunting for boxing gloves, you will immediately notice the weight is measured in ounces (oz). For bag work, lighter gloves are absolutely ideal. They allow you to focus on punch speed and hand mechanics without taxing your shoulders too quickly. The denser foam found in 10oz to 12oz gloves protects your knuckles against the harsh resistance of a heavy bag. This gives you instant kinetic feedback on your punching form.
  • Training Attire: You need clothing that breathes. Throw on some moisture-wicking activewear that allows for a full range of motion. On the mats bare feet are perfect allowing for quick lateral movement. (And yes, bring a hand towel and a refillable water bottle—our cardio circuits guarantee a massive sweat).

Trial Member Note: All new trial members at ATI Martial Arts can easily borrow sanitised gloves during their introductory classes before investing in a personal pair.

Tier 2: Protective Equipment for Technical Ring Sparring

For members who progress into controlled, light-contact live drills, the gear requirements shift drastically. Inside the ring, your equipment must protect both you and your training partner equally. Safety protocols are non-negotiable.

Here is the mandatory sparring gear required before you ever cross the ropes into our purpose-built rings:

  • Dedicated Sparring Gloves (16oz): Why can't you just use your bag gloves? Standard bag gloves feature a compact foam built to resist heavy wear, making them dangerously hard against a human target. Sparring gloves utilise a much softer, thicker layered foam engineered specifically to absorb impact. Standard 16oz gloves are mandatory for all sparring. This extra padding slows down your hand speed slightly while providing maximum cushioning to protect your partner's face during live exchanges.
  • Custom-Fitted Mouthguard: A quality mouthguard does far more than just keep your teeth intact. It cushions jaw impact. It also helps prevent concussions by absorbing the shock transmitted through the jaw joint. While standard boil-and-bite mouthguards work for absolute beginners, a custom dentist-fitted guard offers vastly superior breathing mechanics.
  • Technical Headgear: Headgear is strictly required for all controlled sparring at ATI. It acts as a vital barrier against contact and accidental head clashes. Look for an open-face or cheek-protector model featuring high-density foam padding alongside an adjustable chin strap for a non-slip fit.

Quick Reference: What Size Gloves Do I Need?

If you are still wondering exactly what size gloves to buy, use this simple breakdown based on your body weight and training focus.

  • 10oz to 12oz Gloves: Ideal for adults under 65kg, or anyone focusing strictly on heavy bag and focus mitt drills.
  • 14oz Gloves: Designed for adults between 65kg and 80kg. This is a fantastic middle-ground weight offering solid fitness conditioning alongside enhanced wrist support.
  • 16oz Gloves: Essential for adults over 75kg, and strictly mandatory for anyone participating in technical ring sparring. This size delivers maximum foam density for ultimate impact protection.

Maintaining and Caring for Your Gear

High-quality combat equipment is a serious investment. Proper maintenance extends the life of your leather and keeps your gear hygienic.

  • Air Them Out Immediately: Never leave damp gear sealed inside a gym bag overnight. Open the cuffs fully and hang your gloves in a well-ventilated area after every single class.
  • Wash Your Hand Wraps: Place your wraps inside a mesh laundry bag. Wash them after every couple of uses to prevent aggressive bacterial buildup and foul odours.
  • Use Disinfectant Wipes: Wipe down the interior lining and exterior surface of your gloves and headgear with antibacterial wipes immediately after training.
  • Mouthguard Hygiene: Rinse your mouthguard thoroughly in cold water before storing it in a ventilated anti-bacterial case.
