The Essential Gear Guide for Cross-Training in Mixed Martial Arts

Mr Rodney Lockyer

You hyped yourself up. Then you immediately opened fourteen different browser tabs in a frantic attempt to figure out exactly what kind of athletic clothing is strictly required for your very first physical training session.

Suddenly, you are completely paralysed.

Close the tabs.

Google is screaming at you about pearl weave fabrics and heavy sparring gloves, bombarding you with enough technical equipment choices to trigger a massive wave of gym anxiety before you even manage to step foot onto the mats to begin our mixed martial arts training program.

Breathe. You absolutely do not need to drop half of your hard-earned monthly paycheck on expensive, elite combat sports equipment just to safely begin your new cross-training journey at our academy.

The Striking Essentials

Power matters. When you cross-train in a striking art like Kickboxing, the ultimate long-term goal is always developing flawless technical precision alongside truly explosive physical power directly from the ground up.

Day one is easy. You are not stepping onto the mats to face down a seasoned competitor in an unguided sparring match. Eventually, you will need a solid pair of gloves to protect your wrists during heavy pad work and sparring while also investing in shin guards to prevent nasty bruising on your lower legs. But for your trial classes at ATI, you need absolutely none of this.

We provide the gear. Instead of endlessly stressing over the perfect brand of synthetic leather before you have even learned how to rotate your hips correctly, we want you entirely focused on understanding your own kinetic chain.

The Grappling Toolkit

Grappling changes everything. If you are training in the traditional style, you wear a gi—a heavy cotton uniform designed specifically to act as a heavy canvas armour that withstands aggressive clothing-based grips. If you eventually move into No-Gi classes, the uniform shifts to a tight rash guard paired with compression shorts.

Do you need a gi? Absolutely not (and we wouldn't want you to stress about it anyway). For your very first session, a basic athletic t-shirt and comfortable training shorts without any dangerous metal zippers are all you actually require to safely get started on the mats.

The Reality of Your MMA First Week

We remove the friction. Because we know the hardest part of beginner mixed martial arts is simply walking through those front doors to face down that initial wave of intimidation, ATI supplies the high-density vinyl mats alongside all the necessary introductory equipment. We actively cultivate a welcoming, ego-free environment where your only real challenge is mentally preparing for the deep soreness in those severely underused stabiliser muscles.

Stop scrolling. Instead of agonising over endless online equipment reviews that only serve to unfairly spike your anxiety, just grab a full water bottle and a clean towel. Book your free trial at ATI Martial Arts today, and let us show you exactly how simple starting actually is.
