Is Mixed Martial Arts Safe for Kids? The Benefits of a Split-Training Approach

Mr Rodney Lockyer

You watch those explosive fights on television. You see the locked cage and the raw physical aggression. Naturally, the idea of enrolling your child in that environment triggers immediate parental alarm bells.

We completely understand.

Handing your child over to a martial arts gym requires an immense amount of trust. As seasoned coaches, our goal is to build resilient youth who can handle schoolyard bullies and sudden physical confrontations—without ever stepping into a toxic fight camp. Modern television paints combat sports as a brutal spectacle. We view it as an essential vehicle for profound personal development. We build complete, confident kids without the cage. Learn more about our safe approach to mixed martial arts classes for youth right here in Perth.

Rather than throwing children into a chaotic sparring session, we utilise a highly structured split-training methodology. We separate the striking from the grappling. This extracts the incredible benefits of both disciplines while completely removing the danger of unregulated brawling.

Striking Builds Discipline and Distance

When a child learns to throw a punch, they are actually learning how to install a mechanical switch on their own impulses.

In our striking programs, we do not teach kids how to start playground fights. We teach them the deep biomechanics of movement. Hitting a target requires immense focus. It demands that a child anchor their feet into the mat like concrete pylons, transferring rotational power through their hips while managing their breath under exertion. (If you have ever tried to get a highly energetic seven-year-old to stand perfectly still and focus on a single task, you know exactly how valuable this skill is).

More importantly, striking teaches crucial stranger awareness.

Through kickboxing drills, children learn the exact geometry of personal space. They begin to understand precisely how far away a potential threat needs to be before it becomes dangerous, maintaining a safe physical barrier between themselves and aggressive peers. We pair this physical boundary-setting with vocal projection. Kids learn to confidently use their words to defuse a ticking time bomb long before a physical confrontation ever erupts.

Grappling for Non-Violent Defence

Unfortunately, you cannot always talk your way out of a corner.

When words fail and a bully closes the distance, traditional martial arts often teach children to immediately strike back. We believe there is a significantly safer, far more sophisticated solution.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the ultimate tool for non-violent conflict resolution. It completely removes the need to throw a damaging punch. Instead, it relies on the undeniable physics of leverage—acting as a physical shock absorber against sudden aggression. If a child is grabbed or violently pushed to the ground by a larger peer, grappling teaches them how to secure a safe clinching position to entirely neutralise the attacker's weight.

Control is everything.

A child trained in grappling can pin a bully to the ground, holding them securely in place until a teacher arrives to intervene. Nobody gets struck. Nobody goes to the hospital with a concussion. The defender simply dictates the physical space until the threat is extinguished. By isolating these techniques, our structured youth training strategies ensure students learn critical defence mechanics without the fear of getting hurt in the process.

The Power of the Split Approach

Putting these two pieces together creates an incredibly capable, highly respectful child.

Our split-training approach ensures your child develops the explosive coordination and boundary-setting of elite striking. Then, they acquire the calm, non-violent control of elite grappling. Because they learn these arts in dedicated, highly supervised classes, they absorb the technical brilliance of combat sports without ever absorbing the aggression.

The transition between these two disciplines builds extraordinary mental adaptability. Moving from the high-energy environment of a kickboxing session into the quiet, methodical problem-solving of a grappling class forces a child to rapidly shift their mental gears. They learn to actively regulate their own nervous system. When faced with a stressful academic test or a daunting social challenge, they can draw upon this exact same ability to stay calm under intense pressure.

Give your child the gift of genuine confidence.
